A couple of years ago the Princess Diana Traveling Exhibit came to the Museum in Houston which is about 45 minutes away. Anyways . .it had her WEDDING GOWN; the train and all, tons of her clothes, tiara, jewelery, childhood heirlooms, letters, and all sorts of stuff. It was amazing! Then i knew who she was but i didnt really know that much about her since i was little when all the stuff with her happened. im 16. But when i went and saw it, i was just hooked, I was intrigued and amazed by this woman, Something about her, how she was the most photographed woman in the world, yet so down to earth. Her dedication to her sons. Ever since i have collected stuff about her: books, collectibles, magazines, etc. . . I just wanted to share the neat experience i had and explain why i opened this group. Diana Frances Spencer, was born on July 1, 1961, at Park House near Sandringham, Norfolk. She was the youngest daughter of the then Viscount and Viscountess Althorp, now the late Earl Spencer and the Hon Mrs Shand-Kydd. She had two elder sisters, Jane and Sarah, and a younger brother, Charles.The root of Diana's insecurity lay in her upbringing, despite its privileges. Her family was living on the Queen's estate at Sandringham where her father had rented Park House. He had been a royal equerry for both King George VI and the young Queen Elizabeth II.

The Queen had been the chief guest when Diana's parents were married in 1954; the ceremony at Westminster Abbey was one of the social events of the year. But Diana was only six when her parents split up. She would always remember the crunch of her mother's departing footsteps on the gravel drive. The children became pawns in a bitter custody dispute. Lady Diana was sent to boarding school, eventually attending West Heath Public School in Kent. Here she excelled at sport, particularly swimming, but she failed all her O levels. Nevertheless, in later years she recalled fond schoolday memories, and supported her old school.

After school, she worked in London, first as a nanny, occasionally a cook, and then as an assistant at the Young England kindergarten in Knightsbridge.Her father had moved to Althorpe near Northampton on becoming the eighth Earl Spencer. Her parents had divorced and there was a new Countess Spencer, daughter of the romantic novelist Barbara Cartland. But soon it was Diana who was to become the celebrated member of the family.Rumours spread that her friendship with the Prince of Wales was blossoming into something more serious. Press and television besieged her at every turn. But her days at work were numbered. The Palace tried in vain to play down the speculation. And on February 24, 1981 the engagement became official.However, there were doubts even then about whether they were really compatible. They appeared to have little in common, and there was the age difference: the Prince was 13 years older than Diana. When journalists asked them during the official engagement photo call whether they were in love, both answered "yes" - with the Prince adding "whatever love means". Charles, it emerged later, had confided to a friend that he did not yet love Diana but was sure he could.

Diana once observed that she wanted to be thought of as a workhorse not a clotheshorse. Diana loved clothes; they were a passion and a public duty. As the Princess of Wales, her wardrobe requirements were complex; outfits were needed for her duties as a member of the Royal family, overseas trips, charity work and the many official functions and charity galas that required eveningwear. From the early days of her engagement it was inevitable that everything she wore, every new accessory and change of hairstyle would be scrutinized. The Princess understood that millions of people followed her as a fashion icon and that the crowds who gathered to meet her expected glamour. She also understood that the worldwide media coverage her image generated could be used to good effect – to raise money for the charity causes she so passionately supported. The exhibition displays 28 outfits from the early 1980's to her last public engagement. They reveal inevitable changes in fashion style and the development of a young girl to a confident and mature woman. In the 1980’s the Princess supported the British fashion industry, wearing clothes by Victor Edelstein, Murray Arbeid, Belville Sassoon, Catherine Walker, Bruce Oldfield and Gina Fratini. Diana placed British fashion, with its traditions of classic tailoring for day and romantic evening wear, in the international spotlight. Like any young woman she experimented and not all of her outfits were a total success – but in the 1990’s something rather different happened. The Princess now had the resources, the independence and the experience to create a unique and personal style. British designers continued to provide outfits, notably Catherine Walker and Jacques Azagury, but increasingly she turned to international designers, to Versace, Valentino and Chanel. Her look became more international with a sophisticated and simple silhouette. The effect was all in the details that became her hallmark; superb cut, materials worn with coordinated accessories, handbags, jewelry and shoes. Diana’s image will inevitably define a fashion look of the late 20th century.

Lady in Red - One of Diana's favourite colours. By the 1990s she was a world leader of fashion in clothes, accessories, make up and hair. She became a trendsetter hounded by the press for her latest look, latest remark or latest romance. High street stores and brand labels eagerly copied her outfits and customers in the 30-45 age group recognised her as their fashion leader, copying all her trademarks of style even her fitness fever. In fashion history terms millinery had been dying a slow death in the 60s and 70s as fewer and fewer people wore hats for even occasion wear. The Princess of Wales gave new impetus to the millinery trade with her early passion for hats and once more it became stylish for everyone to wear hats at weddings. Diana gained world television coverage daily to the largest number of people ever. She was easily the most influential fashion icon of the 20th century exhibiting flair and a dash of daring. She will always be part of 1980s fashion history.
